Back-to-School Success Starts with Good Vision

The summer’s coming to an end. Moms and dads all over are making sure their children have everything they need for the school year. It’s also the perfect time to take your child in for an eye exam. Proper vision is central to success in school and as your son or daughter gets older, there are several developmental stages that may lead to changes in his or her eyesight.

As you might have guessed, a lot of progress at school is achieved through children’s eyes. Despite the obvious connection between vision and learning, many parents underestimate or are simply uninformed about vision problems, and don’t get their child’s eyes examined regularly. It’s important to know that because vision in children changes, regular eye care is central to success at school.

Kids have a truly astounding ability to carry on, despite having a vision problem. It is especially important to keep an eye out for the signs of vision problems as your child progresses through school. Telltale signs may include trouble seeing numbers or letters, frequently watering eyes, eye rubbing, squinting, avoiding small print, and head tilting.

Impaired eyesight and growing demands on the eyes, such as smaller print in textbooks or additional homework can noticeably affect their academic performance. New classroom technology, like interactive whiteboards, can also potentially heighten subtle but significant vision problems. Without adequate vision, students may suffer not only in the classroom, but also mentally, physically and emotionally.

If you’re the parent of a child who wears glasses already, now is also a good time to reassess the suitability of his or her current frames and maybe purchase new glasses for your child for the new school year. The more a kid likes and feels comfortable in his/her glasses, the more likely it is that he/she will wear them.

So be sure to visit us as part of your back-to-school routine. We want to help your child begin the year afresh with great vision.
